Oats are not wheat, barley or rye. Yet many oat products carry a warning, and that confuses people.
The cross-contact problem
Oats are often grown in rotation with wheat and processed in the same mills. Grains of wheat or barley can end up mixed in. That is why ordinary oats can’t be called gluten-free.
What the label tells you
Gluten-free oats are grown, harvested and processed to keep other grains out. The pack should say gluten-free on the front or in the ingredient list. Our Prebiotic & Chocolate Granola lists gluten-free rolled oats.
A note on sensitivity
If you have coeliac disease or a medical reason to avoid gluten, follow your doctor’s advice and check each pack’s statement yourself.
