Granola looks simple, but two packs that look alike can be very different once you turn them over. These are the four things worth checking.

1. The order of the ingredients

Ingredients are listed from the largest amount to the smallest. If sugar, syrup or oil comes before the oats, the pack is mostly that. Look for oats and nuts at the top.

2. Other names for sugar

Sugar can appear as glucose, glucose syrup, dextrose, invert sugar, molasses or honey. Several of these on one label add up even if each looks small. Our granola is sweetened with apple juice concentrate and has no added sugar.

3. Per 100 g or per serving

Compare packs using the per 100 g column. Serving sizes differ between brands, and a small serving can make numbers look better than they are. Our nutrition tables use per 100 g.

4. Allergens

Nuts, seeds and gluten are listed in the allergen statement. If you avoid a specific nut, read it every time, because recipes change.

A good label is short, in plain words, and says the same thing on the front and the back.
